Some time in March 2010...
Arriving in Kuala Lumpur, I realized the one-day and two nights I had booked here would not suffice. Letting go of control (and checking the change fee...which was too high ...back to letting go) I bought my hop on, hop off tour ticket and of I went. Since I arrived at 5.30 am on a luxury bus from Singapore (when I say luxury I mean fully reclining seats for everyone at a bargain price of $25) I headed for the hotel I had booked on line.
CHECK OUT THE SEAT!!!
For $30 I was treated to a boutique style room in tunes hotel, they up charge for everything excluding oxygen, but it was still worth it. Hot water that was hot, deliciously soft and filled down pillows, an AC unit that would give you the chills... I was set. Since I could not check into my room until 2pm, and it was only 6.30am I ventured out on the local subway line and headed to the PETRONAS Towers to see the tallest twin buildings on the planet.
Arriving in the morning dusk I was in awe. To look up two intimidating and seemingly perfect towers standing to attention and looking over the whole city, which at that time was pleasantly calm, dwarf you. Venturing up to the viewing bridge that connects the two, I marveled at what money and humans can achieve when properly matched together.
The bottom of these incredible superstructures was a world class six level mall in which I decided to enjoy a tasty breakfast before I ventured out on my hop on / hop off tour. This city was not as pretty as Singapore, but it could definitely hold it's own in terms of culture, money and of course shopping.
Jumping off my tour half way through to explore KL'S acclaimed China town shopping district, I managed to pickup a really good Prada knock off while we were all drenched with a quick but very wet and warm rain storm. As the humidity started to build up, I decided an icy cool beer was in order. The heat is so sweltering here it presents a problem to us beer drinkers... you see when you order beer in Asia you have the choice of two bottle sizes, a small (regular to us) or a large (a pint and a half), the large is the smart and value oriented choice but by the time you get half way down your beer is warm. In India I deciphered an ingenious way around this, when I order the beer I ask it to be accompanied with a champagne size bucket of ice... TAADAA cold beer from the first to the last drop! I was fortunate enough to have a very close friend in KL at the same time as me. Devan is like a big brother to me and had come to meet me in Chinatown.
A few hundred beers, meeting some other Canadians, and a wicked host later... everything from there was a blur. Next stop THAILAND!!!
